Arvonne Fraser Library

Project Description

The Arvonne Fraser Library is owned and operated by Hennepin County Libraries. Prior to extensive renovation it was an historically significant, but underutilized library with numerous building envelope issues. Since the reconstruction it has been recognized with multiple awards for becoming a light-filled, robust community amenity. Architect Ralph Rapson originally designed the modernist building for use as a credit union, using his signature style waffle-slab concrete ceiling, clerestory layout, and exposed brick walls.

A new roof and roof drains were installed to correct years of water infiltration. A lack of natural light made the lower level essentially unusable, so a 20ft x 30ft section of the main floor was removed to visually connect both levels. New skylights and glass railing added even more light and transparency to the building’s interior. The Shaw-Lundquist team met the County’s goal to significantly increase access to library services by delivering collaborative study spaces, quiet seating, flexible meeting spaces, and an area for youth and families. The entire project adhered to Minnesota’s B3 Guidelines.
