Our History
Fred Shaw had a vision. He imagined building better lives, building relationships, and building a better community. In 1974, on the foundation of integrity and pride, Fred Shaw built Shaw-Lundquist Associates Inc., a family owned business that would stand the test of time.

Company Founded
Fred Shaw (Feng Hsiao) and his partner and friend, Lyle Lundquist, were determined to form a construction company in Minneapolis based on their shared values of honesty, trust, and reliability. The two men had already worked together for 20 years and knew they could establish a company that would be better than the competition.
1987
Hoyt Hsiao Joins Shaw-Lundquist
Future President and CEO Hoyt Hsiao begins full-time employment with Shaw-Lundquist
1989
Eden Prairie Water Treatment Plant is Completed
At its opening, the Eden Prairie Water Treatment Plant had the capacity to clarify and filter 4 million gallons of water a day. Shaw Lundquist was proud to assist the city of Eden Prairie in meeting the water supply needs of the community.
1990
Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis is Completed
Bethlehem Baptist Church was founded in 1871 as the First Swedish Baptist Church in Minneapolis. The construction of a new sanctuary was part of an expansion to meet the growing needs of the congregation.
1996
Groundbreaking for Eagan Headquarters
Shaw-Lundquist breaks ground for their current headquarter location.
1999
Shaw Lundquist Celebrates 25 Years!
2000
Groundbreaking for City of Apple Valley Municipal Center
This construction project resulted in a 50,000 sf and three-story Municipal Center
2001
Elizabeth Robbie Stadium wins MCMA Masonry Gold Award
Hailed as one of the “finest facilities in the nation for women’s college soccer,” this stadium seats 1,000 spectators. Did you know that Elizabeth Lyle Robbie was the first female owner of a professional sports franchise in the United States?
2002
MSP Airport Project Completed
Concourses A and C are completed at Terminal 1 of the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport. Concourse C is the longest concourse in the airport!
U of M Ice Arena & Tennis Center
Also in 2002, the University of Minnesota Ridder Ice Arena and Baseline Tennis Center are completed. The Ice Arena has a seating capacity of 3400, and the Tennis Center has bleachers for up to 500 fans. Both state-of-the-art facilities are home to premier Golden Gopher teams.
2004
National Association of Minority Contractors Hall of Fame
What an achievement! Fred Shaw (Feng Hsiao) was the proud recipient of this award for his outstanding work in the construction industry.
2005
Lifetime Achievement Award
Another tremendous achievement for Shaw-Lundquist. Fred Shaw (Feng Hsiao) is recognized by the Minnesota Association of General Contractors for Lifetime Achievement.
2008
Burt and Rusty Cohen Award Recipient
MSP Magazine awards Hoyt Hsiao with the Burt and Rusty Cohen Volunteer Award honoring recipients for their notable and impactful philanthropic work.
2009
New President and CEO
Hoyt Hsiao is officially named the new President and CEO of Shaw-Lundquist and Associates, continuing the good work and longevity of his family.
2010
Trafton Science Center Project Complete
The Trafton Science Center at the University of Minnesota – Mankato renovation project is finished. This was a 16,000 square foot renovation and 70,000 square foot addition completed with Hammel Green & Abrahamson.
2011
Lake Superior College Health & Science Center
Leading the way in higher education green building design, Shaw-Lundquist helped Lake Superior College complete its second LEED certified building with this 36,000 square-foot Health and Science center.
2014
Grand Opening of West Side Flats
The affordable housing apartment complex, West Side Flats, officially opens on St. Paul’s riverfront. Featuring beautiful views of the Mississippi River!
Park at MGM Plaza & Sculpture Garden Completed
In 2014, the West Region team is responsible for the completion of the MGM Plaza and Sculpture Garden in Las Vegas, covering 3 acres of land.
2015
Entrepreneur of the Year Award
Hoyt Hsiao is recognized by the Metropolitan Economic Development Association (MEDA) as the Entrepreneur of the Year. MEDA was founded with the mission of helping BIPOC Entrepreneurs succeed.
First Project for Caesars Entertainment Group
The West Region completes the Augustus Tower Room remodel in Las Vegas, marking its first project for Caesars Entertainment Group.
2016
Shaw-Lundquist earns Twin Cities Business Family Business Award
Featured as one of the country’s largest Asian-American-owned construction companies, Hoyt Hsiao and family accept the win Cities Business Family Business Award on behalf of Shaw-Lundquist.
2017
Most Admired CEO Award
Hoyt Hsiao is named most Admired CEO by MSP Business Journal.
Renovation of Caesars Palace Complete
The West Region team completes a major renovation of Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.
2018
Frogtown Community Center Groundbreaking
Located in St. Paul, Minnesota, the Frogtown Community Center includes state-of-the art facilities and striking architectural features.
2019
Paris Resort and Hotel Renovation Complete
The West Region completes a major renovation of Paris Resort and Hotel in Las Vegas, right in the heart of the Strip.
2020
Minneapolis Preservation Award Recipient
The Arvonne Fraser Library in Minneapolis received the 2020 Minneapolis Preservation Award for Historic Restoration Rehabilitation or Adaptive Reuse.
2021
Hoyt Hsiao Named to Twin Cities Business Magazines Business Hall of Fame
Continuing his father’s legacy, Hoyt Hsiao is committed to Building Better Lives through Integrity and PRIDE. “We really push to be a purpose-driven and value-focused company, where we use those as guideposts for how we bring our team members on,” says Hsiao. “Our purpose is building better lives.” (Quote from TCB HOF Interview)

2023
The Bedford by Martha Stewart Open
The Bedford is designed to transport the imagination to Martha Stewart’s own country farmhouse. This 5,600 sf restaurant inside Paris features exterior “windows” with screens that create the illusion of looking out at the live countryside.
Vista 44 Groundbreak
Vista 44 is a 50-unit apartment located on the north end of downtown Hopkins, Minnesota. It’s use of exterior brick with a flat rook is architecturally compatible with the historic nature of downtown Hopkins. The building has four levels of apartments above one level of underground parking. Apartments consist of 3 one-bedroom, 32 two-bedroom and 15 three-bedroom units. Interior features include multi-purpose spaces and a community break room.
